Meet Gage, newly promoted manager of sales and warehouse operations for iScan<\/a>, Humanim\u2019s social enterprise providing cloud storage<\/a>, digitization, box storage and document management, with a commitment to employing individuals facing barriers to employment.<\/p>\n

Gage began working part time with iScan two years ago while attending college. He started as a warehouse team leader, but was promoted after graduating with a bachelor\u2019s degree in business administration from the University of Maryland Global Campus. \u201cThey told me I was such a good employee, they wanted to keep me around,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

iScan provides scanning and shredding services for companies, along with box storage of documents, and is a reseller of DocuWare<\/a>, a document management software. Being in charge of the warehouse means Gage is the guy who fires up the forklift to move boxes and keep stored documents organized. He\u2019s also the one who keeps track of everything that goes in and out of the warehouse, meaning photographing and logging items in the DocuWare system.<\/p>\n

The other part of his job as sales manager involves attending events and trade shows, such as this summer\u2019s Maryland Association of Counties<\/a> annual conference in Ocean City, to meet potential customers and showcase iScan\u2019s offerings, and then following up with them by phone or email. \u201cSince I\u2019m somewhat of an introvert, that part of the job has stretched me a bit,\u201d he says. \u201cBut what I enjoy most about iScan is the diversity of the work. I don\u2019t want to just sit at a desk for 40 hours a week. My job is a great mix of manual labor, meeting and helping people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gage is currently working on getting two certifications from DocuWare, which will allow him to assist customers by running demonstrations to explain the software more fully.<\/p>\n

Gage says that \u201cOne of the best things about working at iScan is the schedule flexibility.\u201d He lives in Burtonsville, so has to leave at 6 a.m. to make it in time. One of the biggest challenges of the job is \u201chaving to wake up so early,\u201d he jokes. He also appreciates how the job has helped him come out of his shell and become a little more extroverted. He hopes to build his skills in the sales side of the business.<\/p>\n

Gage currently works four 10-hour shifts, leaving his Fridays free to enjoy a variety of hobbies. Whether he\u2019s spending time with his girlfriend of two years, playing video games, riding his motorcycle or dirt bike or spending time with his draft horse, he\u2019s always on the move. He used to train draft horses, and liked them so much that he eventually bought one for himself.<\/p>\n
