Congratulations to Annie and Melissa on earning this year\u2019s DSP Award from the Maryland Department of Disabilities and the Maryland Department of Health \u2013 Developmental Disabilities Administration. \u202fAnnie and Melissa are DSPs in our Behavioral Stabilization Unit and Meaningful Day program, respectively. Their outstanding dedication to Humanim\u2019s mission earned them citations from Governor Wes Moore, recognizing their exemplary performance in caring for the individuals in our program, providing meaningful opportunities to connect with the community, and empowering those we serve to reach their full potential.<\/p>\n

Melissa has been the driving force behind nearly all the vibrant events at Humanim\u2019s Meaningful Day Program, Gerwig lane location, which supports individuals with developmental disabilities through community integration and personal growth. Her leadership in planning events like Easter egg hunts, talent shows, the Christmas snowball party and summer cookouts ensures each event is a success. As the lead planner, Melissa consistently rallies her fellow DSPs and thoughtfully executes every detail. She understands how vital these events are for fostering a sense of belonging and creating opportunities for individuals to build relationships, engage with peers, and feel truly part of a community.<\/p>\n
She dedicates herself to event planning because she knows how celebrations and fun activities contribute to emotional well-being. By involving participants in meaningful tasks like decorating and shopping for supplies, Melissa not only makes events more personal and engaging, but also helps individuals develop important life skills such as communication, teamwork, and planning, further supporting their growth and independence.<\/p>\n

Annie joined Humanim in 2010 and has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to the individuals she serves. She began her journey as a Personal Supports DSP, working with multiple individuals through the week on a 1:1 basis, helping them in the communities and at home. Eventually, she transitioned to a full-time position working in Humanim\u2019s Meaningful Day Program.<\/p>\n
In 2023, Annie transitioned to Humanim\u2019s Behavioral Support Unit (BSU) during its inception. She brings a sense of calm and an endearing attitude that positively influences both participants and staff. In addition to her work at BSU, Annie serves as the dedicated support staff for a participant at their workplace, Weiss, ensuring continuity and support in both community and vocational settings. She is also known for her flexibility, willingly rotating staff assignments, and providing transportation in her own vehicle so participants can access their preferred community outings.<\/p>\n
Annie and Melissa exemplify the qualities of a Direct Support Professional: compassionate, dependable, knowledgeable, and deeply committed to enhancing the lives of those they serve. Their incredible service provision and adaptability make them invaluable members of the Humanim team, and we\u2019re beyond proud to recognize them as Maryland State DSP Award winners.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
